Melissa Mercedes began her career as a Paralegal in a renowned real estate company in the Dominican Republic, where she acquired experience in negotiations and proceedings regarding real estate issues. As a member of the Corporate and Intellectual Property Team, Melissa is focused on real estate matters, as well as Intellectual Property proceedings that the firm handles for its clients in the different jurisdictions in the Caribbean and Latin America.
Melissa provides assistance to clients of the firm with the development and implementation of pledge agreements, mortgage contracts, registration of mortgages, real estate transfers, and all kinds of inquiries concerning real estate, including the execution of the due diligence process in real estate transactions. Furthermore, she provides services to one of the largest foreign banks operating in the country.
In the area of Intellectual Property, she provides support in the processing, registration and renewal of trade names, trademarks, industrial designs, utility models, patents of invention and health permits, not only in the Dominican Republic, but also other jurisdictions in the Caribbean and Latin America.
Her immersion in the Intellectual Property department has allowed her to attend the firm's clients with their requests in countries like Aruba, Anguilla, Bahamas, Barbados, British Virgin Islands, Cayman Islands, Costa Rica, Cuba, Dominica, Haiti, Jamaica, Puerto Rico, and Trinidad and Tobago, among others, in the process of application and registration of trademarks, utility models and patents of invention.
Graduated from the Pontificia Universidad Católica Madre y Maestra (PUCMM), she is the author of the dissertation “Jehovah's Witness’ Refusal to Blood Transfusions: Limitation of the Right to Life by virtue of the Freedom of Religion”, which allowed her to opt for a Bachelor Degree in Law, Summa Cum Laude.
